I recently went to see Apollo 18 and found the premise behind the movie to be intriguing and unsettling. Officially, Apollo 17, was launched December 17th, 1972 as the last manned mission to the moon. A year later, in December of 1973, two American astronauts were sent on a secret mission to the moon funded by the US Department of Defense. The tag line states “actual footage which the astronauts captured on that mission” was used in this Black and White thriller. NASA is said to deny the authenticity of the video, although it's believed to be the real reason we've never gone back to the moon. http://apollo18movie.net/

Unlike the protagonists in Apollo 18, Expedition 28 crew including NASA astronaut Ron Garan and cosmonauts Andrei Borisenko and Alexander Samokutyayev of Russia appear to have made it home to Earth last Thursday, however, photographs and information are limited. Expedition 29 includes NASA astronaut Dan Burbank and Russian cosmonauts Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin arrived at the station and their launch is under review while Russian space officials investigate the loss of a Progress resupply craft in August, says Klaus Schmidt of the International Space Fellowship. http://spacefellowship.com/news/art26667/borisenko-hands-over-command-to-fossum.html

Another interesting development is the delivery of Robonaut (R2B), a state of the art highly dexterous anthropomorphic robot can take over simple, repetitive, or especially dangerous tasks on places such as the International Space Station. According to NASA, was powered up for the first time on the ISS, in August. R2B performed as expected and is scheduled for a movement test on September 1st. Meanwhile we have a dead satellite descending to earth in an uncontrolled orbit with a 1 in 3200 chance not to hit a civilian. The bus-sized satellite, also referred to as a “space craft” used as a climate probe called the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS), and was decommissioned in 2005. It is expected that most of UARS will disintegrate in the upper atmosphere some time towards the end of September or early October .
